No, really. Talk to any professional artist and pretty much everyone will tell you to use Sketch-up or any other 3D software to render backgrounds. And most of them would know how to draw background from scratch, but it’s a time-saver, and helps developing scenarios you can’t reference from photos. Also, when you are meant to draw the very same room several times (in comic, for instance) it will prevent continuity errors.
In short, it’s a tool, and like all tools, you have to know the basics in order to make it work properly.
